Your bequest will help fund all aspects of the delivery of our research and programs. The income from gifts in Wills is critical to ensure that The Moreton Bay Foundation not only survives but thrives for the future.

How do I leave a gift in my Will to The Moreton Bay Foundation?

Leaving a gift in your Will is the only way to ensure your estate goes to the people and causes that you care about and have supported throughout your life. As a Will is a legal document, we do recommend that you consult a solicitor to help you draft it, so that you can be sure your wishes will be carried out as you intend.

There are four ways to leave a gift in your Will to The Moreton Bay Foundation:

  • Pecuniary Bequest – a gift of a fixed amount of money
  • Specific Bequest – an asset (something other than money), which may include property, shares, or artwork
  • Percentage Bequest – a specified percentage of your total estate
  • Residual Bequest – the remainder of your estate after all debts, charges and gifts have been distributed. A residual Bequest maintains its relative value and automatically adjusts with the value of your estate.

Different types of gifts to consider:

Unrestricted Bequest

Bequests made without specific instructions for use. These will be directed to the areas that are most in need within our organisation. An unrestricted Bequest is the most flexible way to benefit the future of The Moreton Bay Foundation.

Dedicated Bequest building financial security – Futures of The Bay Fund

Your Bequest can protect the long-term future of The Moreton Bay Foundation by building a capital base to meet new and emerging needs.

Dedicated Bequest – Program Development

Your Bequest will support the research and development of future programs to protect the Bay for future generations.

Keeping your Will safe

Your up-to-date Will should be kept in a secure location, either at home or deposited in the bank. You may also leave your Will with your solicitor. Whichever option you choose, it is important that the Executors of your Will are informed of the storage arrangements. You may also choose to send a copy to us so that we may keep it in our confidential files.

Wording your Gift

Once you have decided to leave a gift in your Will to The Moreton Bay Foundation, we suggest your solicitor uses words such as those below if you do not already have a Will.

“I give to The Moreton Bay Foundation (ABN 77 562 800 947), for its general purposes, free of all duties (___% of my estate) OR (the sum of $______) OR (a specific assets) for which an authorised receipt from The Moreton Bay Foundation will be sufficient discharge for the executor (s) or trustee.”

What to do if you already have an up-to-date will

If your Will was written within the last 5 years, simply ask your solicitor to add a codicil. A codicil is a document made subsequent to the signing of your Will, with the intention to alter one or some provisions contained in your Will. To add a codicil to your Will, simply pass our suggested wording to your solicitor.

“I (your name) of (your address) declare this to be a (first or other) codicil to my Will dated (date of Will). In addition to any legacies given in my said Will, I will give The Moreton Bay Foundation (the sum of $______, or a specific item, or _____% share, or residue of my estate), which I direct to be paid free from all expenses and duties of whatever kind and I express the wish that:

A. this Bequest be used for its general purposes; or

B. such sum be used to support ________________

I declare that the receipt issued by The Moreton Bay Foundation in respect of this Bequest shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my trustee. In all other respects I confirm my said Will and any previous codicils thereto.”

Keeping your Will up-to-date

Major life events – marriage, divorce, a new baby, the death of a family member or other significant family event – are a good time to update your Will.

Over the years, our situation changes dramatically through births, deaths, marriages, divorce and the acquisition or disposal of property and other assets. A will requires regular periodic examination. Your Will should be reviewed every 5 years, or whenever there is a significant change in your circumstances.
